Deepening Orchard Ecology, Leading Agricultural Innovation—An Interview with WANG YUQIANG, Chairman of Three Gorges Quality Agriculture Development Co., Ltd.

In the hilly terrain of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, orderly orchards are quietly undergoing a transformation: moving from traditional extensive management to a modern agricultural system that balances standardization, digitalization, and ecology. Behind this change is a practical agricultural expert's persistence and exploration. He is WANG YUQIANG, Chairman and Technical Director of Three Gorges Quality Agriculture Development Co., Ltd., an industry stalwart with both strategic management insight and hands-on agricultural engineering skills.

Since assuming the position of Chairman at Three Gorges Quality Agriculture Development Co., Ltd., WANG YUQIANG has adhered to the development philosophy of "ecology as the foundation, technology as the wings," dedicating himself to integrating fruit tree planting with soil restoration, green pest control, organic management, and other systematic projects. His goal is to create an efficient, ecological agricultural demonstration model with characteristics of the Yangtze River Basin. He has led his team to establish an over 3,000-acre smart orchard base in Wanxian District, Chongqing, introducing a complete irrigation network, integrated water and fertilizer systems, and green pest control technologies, bringing the company from traditional planting to large-scale, modernized farming.

In the interview, WANG YUQIANG recalled the early transformation phase of the company: "From the beginning, we never viewed agriculture merely as a supply chain at the end of the industry, but as a systematic project that integrates resource management, ecological construction, and social responsibility. Orchards should not only produce fruits, but also nurture the land, conserve water, and purify the air." It is based on this systems view that he promoted comprehensive reforms in orchard infrastructure, planting standards, harvesting processes, and quality control, building a complete agricultural technology system from soil management to product traceability.

WANG YUQIANG’s career background provides strong support for his expertise in agricultural systems design. He holds an Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) from Southwestern University of Finance and Economics and a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from Nantes School of Business, France, bridging both the technical and managerial dimensions. He has shown formidable integration capabilities in agricultural resource allocation and corporate strategy deployment. Under his leadership, Three Gorges Quality Agriculture has not only established a brand product matrix represented by "Three Gorges Love Orange" but has also earned the title of "Agricultural Industrialization Leading Enterprise at the Municipal Level" from the Chongqing Municipal Agricultural and Rural Affairs Committee for its outstanding performance in green development and resource recycling. The company has been recognized as a model unit for agricultural transformation in Wanxian District for several consecutive years.

Unlike most agricultural entrepreneurs, WANG YUQIANG does not prioritize "yield" as the primary metric. In his vision for the company, optimizing planting structures, controlling fruit quality, improving labor efficiency, and maintaining soil ecological capacity are the core components of the evaluation system. He emphasizes: "Our goal is to grow better, healthier fruits with fewer resources. This is both an efficiency improvement for the company and a social responsibility." To this end, he introduced a set of "ecological density control" methods in the orchard, adjusting plant density, irrigation frequency, and tree rotation to reduce pest transmission, improve ventilation and lighting, and extend the land's use life. The results show a significant reduction in pesticide and fertilizer usage.

Notably, beyond orchard management systems, WANG YUQIANG actively promotes the establishment of fruit product standards, collaborating with local agricultural research institutions and extension services to develop standards for citrus planting, harvesting, grading, and storage processes, supporting the standardized upgrade of the regional industry chain. "Agriculture is not about brute force, but requires a complete set of standards and mechanisms that can be implemented, replicated, and spread," he believes. "Without standards, agriculture cannot be sustainable; without systems, planting cannot expand."

While advancing the company’s development, WANG YUQIANG also actively fulfills his social responsibilities. As the Vice President of the Chongqing Chamber of Commerce in Hainan Province, he has participated in many East-West agricultural cooperation exchange projects, organizing agricultural enterprises to visit tropical agricultural areas in Chongqing and Hainan's Lingshui, Baoting, and other regions to explore cross-regional cooperation on complementary fruits and climate matching. He has played a bridging role in building regional agricultural collaborative development mechanisms.

Looking back on over a decade of hard work, WANG YUQIANG admits that agricultural change does not happen overnight, but every adjustment in planting density and every new orchard protection measure implemented lays the foundation for the future. He says: "The root of agriculture is not in the soil, but in the thinking. We are not just fruit growers; we are part of building ecological civilization."

Today, Three Gorges Quality Agriculture has become not only the name of a company but a symbol of the leap of agriculture in the hilly areas of Chongqing and Southwest China towards modern governance structures. WANG YUQIANG, with his practical spirit of "understanding ecology, managing well, and mastering systems," is writing his own footnote in the deep transformation of Chinese agriculture.
