A connected device does not necessarily send every calculation to a distant server. Some processing can happen on the device itself or on nearby equipment. The choice changes how information moves through the system and which parts need to remain available for a task to work.
Local processing can reduce the amount of information that must be transferred for certain tasks. It can also support functions when a connection is unreliable. These benefits depend on the workload: a device with limited memory or power cannot be assumed to perform every job as effectively as a larger system.
The design involves more than choosing a location for computation. Software updates, monitoring and recovery still need a plan. A fleet of devices can become difficult to manage if each one behaves differently or retains an outdated version of the application.
The useful comparison is between complete operating arrangements. Teams should ask what happens when a connection fails, how results are checked and how changes reach the devices. Moving work closer to the point of use can solve one constraint while creating another, so the architecture needs to match the actual task.
