A trailer has to make a story inviting while withholding enough of it to preserve the experience of watching. That task gives it a structure different from the film it promotes. Images may be connected by mood and rhythm rather than by their original place in the narrative.
Music is particularly influential. A change in tempo can make a sequence feel urgent, playful or reflective, even when the individual shots are restrained. Dialogue selected from different scenes can also create an apparent exchange that functions as a summary rather than a literal moment from the film.
The selection of characters and incidents shapes expectations about genre. A trailer that emphasises comic reactions may prepare viewers for a different balance of tones from one built around suspense. These choices are part of the invitation, but they do not provide a complete account of the finished work.
Watching a trailer as its own piece of editing can clarify both its appeal and its limits. The useful question is how it creates anticipation from a small selection of material. What remains outside that selection may be just as important to the experience the film eventually offers.
