The Difference Between a Season Finale and a Story's Ending

A season finale has two responsibilities that do not always point in the same direction. It needs to reward the attention given to the episodes already watched, while a continuing series may also need to leave room for another chapter. The balance depends on which questions the season has taught viewers to care about.

Resolution does not require every event to be settled. A relationship can reach a meaningful turning point even when the wider situation remains uncertain. The audience receives a sense of movement because the characters cannot simply return to the position they occupied at the beginning.

A cliffhanger creates a different effect. It delays the outcome of an immediate event and asks viewers to carry that uncertainty forward. The device is more satisfying when the season has also delivered changes of its own, rather than treating every major question as material for a later instalment.

An ending can therefore be assessed through what it completes as well as what it withholds. The strongest finales make continuation feel possible without making the preceding season feel provisional. They provide a point from which viewers can look back and recognise the shape of the journey.
